Ignitia Wins $100K from Dubai 2020 Expo

Ignitia, the Swedish startup with a subscription-based app to forecast rain to a degree twice as accurately as other weather services in order to help farmers grow crops more reliably, received a $100,000 social entrepreneurship grant from the Dubai: Expo 2020. The company was one of 29 selected from 575 applications, from 71 countries, in a three-stage selection process.

The $100 million program, which will announce new grants twice a year until October 2019, exists to support promising for-profit startups that also aim for positive social impact.

Using satellites, the Ignitia app can predict with high precision not only when rain will fall, but where, especially in the tropics, specifying regions within cities rather than counties. Beginning as a research project to understand the differences in tropical weather events, the founders decided to create a model to more accurately predict them. Ignitia works closely with small-scale farmers across the globe.
